In 1983, sales began to skyrocket when Honda® introduced the XR-type high-performance single-cylinder four-stroke with full suspension and lightweight aluminum wheels.In 1982, Honda® released the ATC 200E “Big Red,” a landscape changing model featuring suspension and racks giving it the distinction as the first utility three-wheeled ATC.This ATC is considered the first high-performance three-wheeler with full suspension and a five-speed transmission. Honda® did not stop there because one year later they released the ATC250R.Equipped with a five-speed semiautomatic transmission with an ultra-low First gear, the ATC185 could be equipped with optional Honda® line front and rear racks and a trailer hitch to convert it into a workhorse. This ATC had a 180cc engine 180cc engine that cranked out twice the muscle of an ATC110. In 1980, they released the most powerful three-wheeler yet, the ATC 185.

Honda® was the first manufacturer to make a three-wheel off-road vehicle that quickly rose in popularity in the 1970s and 1980s but their success was short lived due to concerns about their safety. Before the ATV we had the three-wheel ATC (all-terrain cycle). Still, the ATC 250R reigned supreme until mounting safety concerns and regulatory pressure resulted in a manufacturer agreement that marked the end of all 3-wheel ATV production in 1988.The four-wheel ATV/Quad we know and love has been one of the most popular off-road vehicles for decades but this was not always the case. The only thing that could catch the Honda was the 4-wheel Suzuki Quad-Racer. Low-profile tires on gold-anodized lightweight alloy wheels hooked as good as they looked. Forged triple clamps contained massive air-adjustable 39mm front forks that had almost 10 inches of travel, and the Pro-Link rear suspension backed it up with another 10 inches.

A close-ratio 6-speed transmission with heavy-duty manual clutch and an O-ring chain cut the back wheels loose, and dual-piston calipers put the clampdown on the front and rear disc brakes. The all-new water-cooled single-cylinder two-stroke engine packed a counterbalancer that quelled vibrations and cranked out 40% more horsepower than the previous generation through a factory-engineered expansion chamber exhaust. The third-generation version of the ATV that started the 3-wheel racing revolution answered its Kawasaki Tecate and Yamaha Tri-Z archrivals with a bigger, wider and faster machine in the fierce battle for supremacy. As racers fought it out on the dirt, manufacturers battled on the showroom floor, and Honda gained ground with its 1985 ATC250R. Few could have foreseen that the pokey 1970 ATC90 would spawn a fiercely competitive racing series, but that's what happened, and the 1981 Honda ATC250R was the first full-suspension high-performance ATV. The unusual off-road machine built with fun and utility in mind sparked explosive growth of an entirely new industry, and this unrestored, all-original 1985 Honda ATC 250R stands as the apex predator of ‘80s 3-wheel racing performance.

Originally named the US90, the Honda ATC90 All-Terrain Cycle 3-wheeler packed an 89cc/7 HP engine and floatation tires that doubled as the suspension.
